Facebook Chat: How can Climate Change Resilience Bring Opportunities to Reduce Inequalities11/1/2016 As the Paris Agreement on climate change is about to enter into force on 4 November 2016, don't miss the opportunity to discuss climate change resilience and how this can help reduce inequalities in the world, in a Facebook chat on 3 November from 10 am to 11 am EDT. UN DESA’s Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, Lenni Montiel, and the team of authors behind the World Economic and Social Survey 2016: “Climate Change Resilience – An opportunity for reducing inequalities” in UN DESA’s Development Policy and Analysis Division, will be on UN DESA’s Facebook page to discuss the findings of this survey and answer your questions. According to the survey, evidence is increasing that climate change is taking the largest toll on poor and vulnerable people, and these impacts are largely caused by inequalities that increase the risks from climate hazards. How: Post questions here http://bit.ly/WESSchat ahead of or during the event Hope to see you on Facebook on 3 November! Remember to use #WESSchat on Twitter to share your questions or comments! Recognizing the fundamental role of sustainable transport in fighting climate change and achieving the sustainable future we want, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will convene the first ever global conference on sustainable transport, on 26 and 27 November 2016 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. The Global Sustainable Transport Conference will bring together key stakeholders from Governments, UN system and other international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to engage in a dialogue that emphasizes the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable transport and its multiple roles in supporting the achievement of the SDGs. All modes of transport—road, rail, aviation, ferry and maritime - will be addressed. The programme of the Conference reflects the diversity and complexity of the transport sector and will provide a platform for forging partnerships and initiatives to advance sustainable transport objectives. With the guidance of the Statistical Commission, and the support of the Statistics Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (HLG), in close consultation with member states and international partners, will be leading the discussion on the organization of the UN World Data Forum. The first United Nations World Data Forum will be hosted by Statistics South Africa in Cape Town, South Africa in January 2017. A new online knowledge hub launched today provides an unparalleled view of multilateral, national and sub-national efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The International Institute for Sustainable Development’s SDG Knowledge Hub consolidates our Policy & Practice knowledge bases—and the tens of thousands of published articles contained within them. Focused on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and its Sustainable Development Goals, the platform draws on IISD’s network of experts to provide real-time information on SDG implementation. The value of the hub lays in the depth of information it will contain on each SDG, as well as the breadth of knowledge across all elements of the integrated 2030 Agenda. Content is organized and searchable according to the 17 SDGs. Information is also categorized according to actors, focusing on intergovernmental bodies, agencies and funds within the UN system, as well as national governments, major partnerships, stakeholders and non-state actors. In addition, content is searchable by sevenregional groups as well as three regional groupings of small island developing States. Users can also filter posts by issue area, action type and specific elements in SDG 17, on the global partnership. This filter permits users to focus in on news based on whether it addresses means of implementation (MOI), such as capacity building and education, or the following systemic issues: data, monitoring and accountability; multi-stakeholder partnerships; and policy and institutional coherence. This high-level side event is intended to address the diversity of urban issues faced by SIDS and to provide guidance on the best ways SIDS can enhance their resilience and sustainability of their human settlements. The event will provide an opportunity for participants to share best practices to improve urban planning, governance, and institutional mechanisms. The event will also discuss how enhancing urban resilience and promoting sustainable urban development could contribute to the implementation of the global agendas and frameworks including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SAMOA Pathway, the New Urban Agenda, and Sendai Framework. Expected outcome - Address diverse urban and settlements issues in SIDS and their linkages to the global context – the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SAMOA Pathway, the New Urban Agenda, and Sendai Framework. - Provide recommendations for sustainable development of human settlements in SIDS through policy, planning and design, and regulatory instruments. - Promote partnerships for the coordinated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SAMOA Pathway, and the New Urban Agenda. The high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development will be convened in New York, from 5 to 9 June 2017, coinciding with World Oceans Day, to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14.
